FSX version of the Radio Range Project

Gents,
Due to the tireless efforts of some of our pilots who enjoy FSX, not to mention our resident genius Dave Bitzer spending hours recoding his Radio Range Gauge, we believe that we have come up with a workable Radio Range gauge for FSX. Unfortunately, due to some problems with the third-party sound-generating gauge, the FSX gauge is not able to simulate increasing/decreasing sound volume based upon distance from the station. However, inclusion of the Signal Strength gauge mimics the volume change. On the new gauge Dave has four volume selections from Off to Loud. The visual scenery lacks the four outer towers at each station. But other than that it is a fully operational system with the same features as the FS9 version.
We are kicking around the idea of a 'slipstream' upgrade to the FS9 version for sometime late this summer and would like to include an FSX version along with it. In order to do that, we would like to offer our package to anyone who would like to beta test it in FSX and report problems or comments. John Bell is working on an installation package and if there is sufficient interest we would be willing to release it to our faithful fans.
If you have interest in testing this package please respond to this e-mail. At some point in the next few weeks, I'll provide further information.
Regards,
Al Greene

Allan,
I'm interested in Radio Range for FSX and thanks to 1013_John Bell I'm running my MAAM-Sim DC-3 with Radio Range features in FSX.

Hartwig,
I knew that you had been in contact with John and helping him. May I assume that you have everything you need right now from John?

:)Hello Al,
John Skokan, DC3 Airways pilot #0480 here. I was asking about the Radio Range when I first got FSX. There was no program then according to Norm. Soooo, now that there are more pilots out there that would be interested in an FSX ver of RR flying, I would like to try it out also. I need to know what plane and panel do I need to dnld in fsX, and what scenery do I need to dnld for fsX? Also, I use At&t Yahoo for my browser and email, and can't seem to get my pireps to be sent to DC3 Airways through this email system.
Ok, I will wait to hear from you.
BTW, I just had a bad power surge, by tree fall on Christmas Eve '09, and lost my Dell computer to it. Well, I just received my replacment Alienware Aurora, with Win 7 HP-64 bit computer on Saturday, 1/23/10. I am still downloading flight sim stuff and reinstalling 9 years worth of flight sim back into my new computer. As you can imagine, it is a daunting task.....onward and UPward!
Thanks, John Skokan, pilot 0480.

Hi John,
I'm the guy that is responsible for not getting an FSX RR program out to the masses. I have no excuse other than I've been swamped at work since December and haven't done a thing on the project.
When FSX came out, we found out quickly that there were serious issues to confront in order to get out a viable package. Thanks to work from quite a few people, not the least of whom is Dave Bitzer, most of the problems have been corrected. However, many things remain in order to get out an FSX package and quite frankly, from viewing what I consider an almost total lack of interest in the RR project from the majority of our pilots, I'm not inclined to make it a priority for my spare time right now. We still plan to get it out at some point but I can't say when.
Here's the other thing. Since I don't have FSX, I don't know the first thing about it except that it needs a high powered PC that i'm not inclined to buy. Literally, I am clueless about FSX. I don't know what airplanes you need to download or how some folks have managed to get it running. However, there are some people that do know how and I suspect, knowing what good guys they are, they'd be willing to help you out. John Bell is one of them, and he's a fine fellow. You might be able to send him an email or a private message from the forum and ask his help. Also there are a few other guys that have it up and running and you can find their names by browsing likely topics on this forum.
I'm sorry I couldn't personally help you out more, but until I get more spare time, the FSX project is on hold.
Warm regards,
Al

How ya doing John. Sorry, I just today looked in on this forum. Dave Bitzer
and I worked up a gauge for FSX Radio Range. I used the FS9 scenery and made
hundreds of NDB's and FSCommander, FSX.pln flight plans for the entire RR4
Radio Range. I also reworked the Hump-CBI for FSX. That I'm still working
on. The scenery files I have now are good and flyable.but some of the
airports runways don't show up very well. Still tons of flying there, and
I'm still working on it.
If you still want it, in the morning I can put together some files for you
and give you a link.

I got the FSX RR files from John Bell, and other than a self-imposed wound, it installed OK, but not easily since it is not yet in its final install form. This obviously is not a problem to fix when the FSX RR system is judged stable.
My two flights were a joy, although there is one technical issue that I need to check. If it is an alleged problem I will address it in a future post.
I think we will regret the headaches of "slipstreaming" (presumably infers manually moving folders from fs9 to FSX). But, yes, for those with dial-up connections, manual slipstreaming could be a blessing.
Slipstreaming will probably be our number one support issue when attempted by inexperienced people. The installer (experienced or otherwise) seldom tells you up front what you need to know to quickly help out.
I would be inclined to restrict that feature to our VA to gain some experience before putting it on the archives. Bill Rambow can tell you that after years of producing the R4D thhat their worst support issue comes from people who don't read the instructions. And he knows how to write instructions.
